BALOTRA, RAJASTHAN — What was supposed to be a peaceful return from a spiritual journey turned into a horrific disaster late Sunday night, July 12, 2026 when a speeding SUV rammed into the rear of a heavy dumper truck on the Barmer–Jodhpur National Highway. The devastating crash has left five young men dead and three others fighting for their lives in critical condition.
The accident occurred near Bhandiyawas village in the Balotra district of Rajasthan. The force of the high-speed collision reduced the SUV to a mangled heap of metal, trapping its occupants inside and prompting an urgent midnight rescue operation by local residents and emergency services.
The victims, all young men residing in Kanod village within Barmer district’s Baytoo area, were traveling in a Mahindra Scorpio. They were reportedly driving home after paying obeisance and offering prayers at the Bhomiyaji Temple in Jodhpur.
According to Pachpadra Deputy Superintendent of Police Yogesh Choudhary, the tragic incident unfolded around midnight when the speeding Scorpio crashed violently into the rear of a heavy trailer-dumper truck moving in the same direction ahead of it.
The impact was so massive that the bang was heard by villagers living kilometers away. Nearby residents and passing motorists rushed to the scene to pull the victims from the crushed frame of the SUV.
At the time of the crash, eight people were inside the vehicle, prompting emergency responders to quickly transport the victims to the Government Nahata Hospital in Balotra. Tragically, three of the occupants succumbed to their injuries directly at the crash site and were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The five other critically injured victims were immediately given first aid and referred to a specialized hospital in Jodhpur, but two of them sadly passed away either during transit or shortly after arriving at the facility, bringing the total death toll to five. The three remaining survivors—identified as Babu, Mukesh, and Hemaram—are currently undergoing intensive medical treatment in Jodhpur, where they remain in critical condition.
The bodies of the deceased have been shifted to the mortuary at the Government Nahata Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police officials have notified the victims' families, who are arriving in Balotra to receive the bodies.
"We have launched a full investigation into the crash," a senior police official stated. "Teams are currently scanning CCTV footage from nearby toll plazas and establishments to reconstruct the exact chain of events and determine if low visibility, sudden braking by the dumper, or extreme speeding caused the fatal impact."
