Tragedy in Zaporizhzhia: Russian Air Strikes Kill 6 and Injure Dozens Across Ukrainian Region

ZAPORIZHZHIA, UKRAINE — A devastating overnight assault by Russian forces has left at least 6 people dead and nearly 20 others injured after a wave of ballistic missiles and guided aerial bombs struck residential districts and critical infrastructure in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia.

The combined aerial barrage hit the regional center shortly after midnight, shaking multi-story apartment complexes and igniting large fires across the city.

The overnight attack on Zaporizhzhia took place around 00:30 AM on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, when Russian forces unleashed a barrage of ballistic missiles and KAB guided bombs. The assault resulted in heavy casualties, leaving at least 6 people confirmed dead and more than 19 others injured. The strikes caused severe infrastructure damage across the regional center, impacting four residential apartment blocks, destroying a garage cooperative, and knocking out parts of the city's power grid.

Residents reported hearing roughly ten rapid explosions in quick succession around 12:30 a.m., followed by a massive, earth-shaking blast believed to be a heavy guided aerial bomb (KAB).

According to regional governor Ivan Fedorov, the strikes tore through residential neighborhoods and industrial sites, damaging at least four large residential apartment buildings and setting a local garage cooperative ablaze. The severe structural damage caused localized blackout conditions across several districts as power infrastructure was hit.

The August 11 attack inflicted widespread destruction across several sectors of Zaporizhzhia. In terms of residential infrastructure, four apartment blocks sustained significant damage from direct strikes. Critical power grid infrastructure was also severely disrupted, causing local blackouts across multiple districts. Additionally, industrial and commercial facilities were hit, including a local garage cooperative that was set ablaze during the assault.

Rescue teams, firefighters, and medics navigated smoke-filled, darkened streets to pull survivors from beneath shattered concrete and debris. Emergency crews worked straight into the morning hours to extinguish active blazes and restore power to critical services.

"The enemy attacks Zaporizhzhia daily with missiles, guided bombs, and attack drones. All those affected in this latest wave are receiving urgent medical and humanitarian assistance."— Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration

Simultaneous alerts and explosions were also reported in Kyiv and other regional hubs as Ukraine’s Air Force warned of widespread ballistic missile threats. Officials continue clearing rubble in Zaporizhzhia as emergency services work to fully assess the casualties and extent of structural damage.
