Tragedy in the Air: One Dead After Czech Army Helicopter Carrying 5 Soldiers Crashes

NÁMĚŠŤ NAD OSLAVOU, Czech Republic — A tragic training accident has shaken the Czech military after a modern army helicopter crashed at an air force base on Thursday, July 23, 2026 leaving one soldier dead and four others injured. The aircraft involved was a U.S.-made Bell UH-1Y Venom military helicopter, a modern variant of the iconic Huey series. Five soldiers were on board when the chopper went down under circumstances that remain unclear.

Emergency rescue units, including multiple ground crews and air ambulances from Jihlava and the neighboring Olomouc region, were immediately dispatched to the crash site to secure the area and provide trauma care.

Despite rapid intervention, officials confirmed that one crew member did not survive the impact. The remaining four service members sustained various injuries and were transported to regional hospitals for urgent treatment. The Czech Republic only began operating these advanced American helicopters in July 2023, utilizing them to replace outdated, Soviet-designed Mi-35 aircraft.
