Tragedy in Tamil Nadu: 1 Dead, Multiple Injured in Metal Plant Furnace Explosion

GUMMIDIPOONDI, India — A horrific industrial accident claimed the life of a young migrant worker and left several others injured early Tuesday morning, July 14, 2026, when a high-temperature melting furnace exploded at a metal recycling facility in southern India.

The disaster occurred at Unit II of the Jain Resource Recycling plant (part of the Jain Metal Group), located within the SIPCOT Industrial Complex in Gummidipoondi, Tiruvallur district—about 45 kilometers northwest of Chennai. The powerful blast triggered a massive fire that tore through the facility, causing extensive damage.

According to local police reports, the blast took place in the early hours of Tuesday. The facility, which specializes in processing copper scrap and non-ferrous metals, was operating its melting furnaces when one of the units exploded.

"The accident occurred when a furnace used to melt copper materials exploded due to excessive heat during operations," a police official stated.

The sheer force of the explosion shattered the surrounding structure and instantly ignited a significant fire. The blast was so intense that debris was scattered hundreds of meters from the site.

Emergency response teams, including local police and the Fire and Rescue Services, rushed to the industrial complex to battle the flames and locate workers trapped in the debris. Tragically, Ravi Ranjan, a 24-year-old guest worker from the state of Bihar, was killed in the explosion, succumbing to his injuries while being rushed to the hospital. In addition to the fatality, at least five other guest workers—all fellow natives of Bihar—sustained serious injuries in the blast.

The injured men were quickly transported to the government hospital in Gummidipoondi and specialized facilities in Chennai for urgent medical treatment.

Following the incident, Jain Resource Recycling filed a material event disclosure with the National Stock Exchange of India and BSE Limited. The company announced that it has temporarily suspended all operations in the affected section of the Gummidipoondi plant as a safety precaution while damage assessments are carried out.

The firm expressed its commitment to providing full support to the victims' families. While the company noted that the physical damage caused by the fire is covered under its insurance policies, the suspension of operations is expected to temporarily impact production timelines for its domestic and international clients.

Local authorities have registered an official case and launched a full-scale investigation to determine if safety protocols were breached or if equipment failure led to the fatal buildup of heat in the furnace.
