Tragedy in Plateau: Over 20 Dead, Dozens Injured in Devastating Fresh Attack

JOS, Nigeria — Over 20 people were killed and dozens left injured on Tuesday after a group of heavily armed gunmen launched a devastating late-night raid on communities in Nigeria's central Plateau State. The assault unfolded between Monday night and early Tuesday morning as the assailants carried out house-to-house raids in the Binper community within the Mangu Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses reported that gunmen forced open the doors of sleeping residents, opening fire indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze before fleeing the area.

Emergency responders and local volunteers recovered around 30 bodies ahead of morning burials, while several victims suffering from gunshot and sharp-weapon wounds were rushed to nearby medical facilities. Community leaders are currently conducting a headcount as multiple residents remain unaccounted for following the chaos.

The attack marks another violent chapter in a long-standing cycle of inter-communal conflict across Nigeria’s Middle Belt. Tensions in Plateau State frequently erupt into violence over land access, grazing rights, and resource competition between local farming communities and pastoralists, compounded by the presence of active criminal gangs in the region.

No group has officially claimed responsibility for the assault. State authorities and security forces have deployed additional personnel to the area to restore order and track down the perpetrators. Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang instructed emergency management and humanitarian agencies to provide immediate relief and medical support to the affected families and survivors.

In response to the escalating violence, local civil society organizations and human rights groups have renewed their calls for the federal government to establish permanent security outposts in vulnerable rural areas. Representatives emphasized that without long-term structural interventions, including proactive intelligence gathering and dedicated community policing units, remote farming settlements will remain highly susceptible to coordinated night attacks.

The latest wave of destruction has also triggered widespread displacement, with hundreds of terrified residents fleeing their homes for safer towns nearby. Temporary shelters are struggling to manage the sudden influx of displaced families, prompting local community leaders to appeal to international relief organizations for food, clean water, and medical supplies to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis in the district.
