Tragedy in Nueva Vizcaya: Family of Three, Including Village Watchman, Electrocuted at Home

SOLANO, NUEVA VIZCAYA — A quiet Sunday evening dissolved into unimaginable heartbreak for a local community after three members of a single household—including a veteran village watchman, his wife, and their young son—were killed in a swift and tragic electrocution accident in their backyard.

The fatal incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2026, in Barangay San Luis, Solano. Investigators and grief-stricken family members revealed that the deaths were the result of a chain-reaction accident triggered by an exposed, live electrical wire.

The victims were identified as 36-year-old Gener Costales, a dedicated barangay tanod; his 32-year-old wife, Joanne; and their 10-year-old son, Kurt Genesis, a fifth-grade student.

According to Alfredo Costales Jr., the watchman's brother who witnessed the tragedy, the sequence of events began with an everyday household chore. Gener was in the backyard open bath area attempting to hang wet, washed clothes onto a clothesline made of galvanized iron wire. Unbeknownst to him, the iron clothesline had come into direct contact with an active, uninsulated electric wire.

The moment Gener touched the wire, a powerful electric current surged through his body, instantly trapping him. Hearing her husband’s cries, Joanne abandoned the deep well hand pump where she was drawing water and rushed to pull him free—only to be instantly ensnared by the same lethal current.

Seeing both of his parents in agony, 10-year-old Kurt Genesis courageously tried to rescue them, but he too was instantly electrocuted. The sheer intensity of the electrical current was so severe that it caused visible, devastating physical trauma to all three victims.

The victims' father discovered the three lying on top of each other in the backyard and frantically called for emergency assistance. First responders rushed the family to a nearby hospital, but medical staff officially declared all three dead on arrival.

The sole survivor of the immediate family is the couple's youngest child, a three-year-old boy, who was safely inside the main house playing when the accident took place. Family members are currently gathering to determine who will raise and care for the now-orphaned toddler.

The sudden loss has cast a deep pall of grief over Barangay San Luis, where Gener Costales had spent nearly two decades protecting his neighbors.

"He had been serving faithfully as a village watchman for almost 20 years," said Barangay Chairman Ernesto Ramones. "This is an unimaginable loss for our barangay. We are coordinating to provide immediate financial assistance to the surviving family members and will facilitate the processing of the watchman's insurance benefits to help support his surviving son."

Local authorities have urged residents to routinely inspect their outdoor clotheslines and backyard wiring, warning that exposed, active lines near water sources or metal fixtures pose extreme hazards, especially during the rainy season.
