Tragedy in Munich: One Dead After Freight Trains Collide in Violent Crash

MUNICH, GERMANY — A fatal rail accident disrupted the early hours of Saturday morning after two freight trains collided on a railway bridge in northern Munich, killing one person and sending multiple train carriages plunging onto the street below.

The violent impact triggered a large-scale emergency response and forced the immediate closure of a major thoroughfare.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:40 AM local time on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in Munich's Milbertshofen district. According to the Munich Police Department, the two cargo trains were executing shunting and maneuvering operations when they collided on the elevated tracks.

The force of the collision caused one of the trains to derail, violently uncoupling two empty cargo wagons. The carriages plunged roughly 5 meters (16 feet) off the edge of the railroad bridge, coming to a halt with one end resting on the street below while the other end remained precariously wedged against the bridge structure.

Around 60 first responders, including specialized rescue squads and firefighters, were dispatched to the crash site immediately after the alert was raised.

One individual lost their life in the collision. Authorities have not publicly identified the victim, and it remains unclear whether the deceased was an operator or an individual on the tracks at the time of the impact. No other injuries were reported from the scene.

Munich police swiftly cordoned off the street running underneath the bridge, establishing a wide perimeter to safeguard the public. Heavy recovery machinery was brought in by morning to stabilize and lift the dangling, multi-ton railcars. Officials noted that because the derailed wagons were not carrying any cargo, there was no chemical spill or immediate hazardous material threat to the surrounding public safety.

A spokeswoman for the rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, confirmed that the accident occurred on a line designated exclusively for freight transport. As a result, passenger travel remained unaffected, with regional and long-distance commuter services running on schedule.

A joint investigation has been launched by federal rail authorities and local police to determine why the shunting operations went so catastrophically wrong. The street and the immediate area surrounding the Milbertshofen bridge are expected to remain entirely closed to traffic until at least Sunday while structural engineers inspect the bridge's integrity and cleanup operations wrap up.
