KEBBI STATE, NIGERIA — A coordinated tactical ambush by heavily armed bandits in Kebbi State has left 10 police officers and two civilians dead, sparking widespread concern over the escalating violence and sophisticated capabilities of criminal networks in Northwest Nigeria.
The assailants, operating in large numbers, ambushed a security patrol team that was responding to an urgent distress call in the region. After overwhelming the security forces, the attackers looted heavy military-grade weaponry—including high-powered AK-47 assault rifles and Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) launchers—before fleeing the scene.
According to local authorities and eyewitness reports, the security patrol was lured into a carefully planned kill zone while attempting to defend nearby farming communities from imminent raids. The bandits opened fire with heavy weaponry, instantly crippling the security vehicles and overpowering the response unit.
Following the bloody engagement, the criminal group ransacked the scene to carry out a massive arms haul. The assailants seized standard-issue AK-47 assault rifles belonging to the fallen officers, alongside heavy ordnance including Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) launchers used by specialized response units. Additionally, the attackers looted tactical vests, service radios, and numerous rounds of live ammunition before fleeing the area.
The loss of heavy weaponry has heightened security fears, as armed gangs routinely use captured military supplies to launch further assaults on vulnerable rural towns and security posts.
Northwest Nigeria continues to grapple with severe insecurity driven by loosely affiliated bandit networks and extremist groups. Operating from dense forest hideouts across Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto states, these gangs exploit the remote terrain to carry out mass kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, and fatal raids on military outposts.
The region's security vulnerabilities are further compounded by the loot of heavy weaponry, such as RPGs and AK-47s, which continually bolster the gangs' operational strength, as well as close border proximity that allows attackers to make fast escapes across state and national lines.
In response to the bloody ambush, state and federal authorities have deployed joint military-police tactical squads to track down the fleeing attackers and recover the looted armaments.
"This deliberate attack on our security personnel is an assault on peace itself. Reinforcements have been deployed, and operations will continue until every single weapon is recovered and those responsible are brought to justice."— Official Security Statement
State leadership has offered condolences to the families of the fallen officers and civilians, promising medical support for any wounded and renewed military hardware support to bolster local security operations.
