BARAMULLA, Jammu & Kashmir — A tragic road mishap on Sunday, June 21, 2026 claimed one life and left another individual battling for survival after their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into the fast-flowing River Jhelum in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The accident has once again highlighted safety concerns on regional mountain highways, prompting a swift multi-agency rescue effort.
According to official sources, the incident involved a Maruti Alto car traveling along the Baramulla–Uri National Highway. As the vehicle reached the Rajerwani area, the driver reportedly lost control of the car.
The vehicle skidded violently off the road surface before plunging down the embankment and dropping directly into the submerged currents of the River Jhelum.
Immediately following the crash, local residents who witnessed the vehicle veer off the highway raised an alarm, prompting rescue teams and local authorities to quickly rush to the site.
A coordinated emergency operation was launched to reach the submerged vehicle amid challenging river conditions. Rescuers successfully extricated both occupants from the vehicle and rushed them to a nearby medical facility for emergency stabilization.
Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, one of the occupants succumbed to their severe injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second individual remains in highly critical condition and is currently undergoing intensive treatment.
