Tragedy in Bangkok: One Dead After Shophouse Near Wat Traimit Collapses

BANGKOK, THAILAND — A fatal structural failure occurred near the historic Wat Traimit Witthayaram Worawihan temple in Bangkok on Saturday afternoon, June 20, 2026 claiming the life of a passerby and injuring another. The sudden collapse prompted an immediate and large-scale response from local emergency services.

The incident took place shortly before 5:00 PM on June 20, 2026, in the Talat Noi subdistrict of Samphanthawong. A large concrete slab, serving as a second-floor balcony of an aging shophouse, unexpectedly gave way. The heavy debris crashed down onto Charoen Krung Road, near a Starbucks outlet situated on Rama IV Road.

According to witness accounts, the collapse produced a loud crash initially mistaken for a falling electricity pole, which was immediately followed by a massive plume of white dust. The falling concrete directly struck a male passerby, who was tragically confirmed dead at the scene by emergency rescue personnel.

The Rama 199 radio centre received urgent alerts via their 199-emergency hotline and the Line application, quickly dispatching firefighters and rescue workers from the Suan Mali Fire and Rescue Station. Medical teams from Klang Hospital provided on-site first aid to the surviving injured victim before transporting them to a nearby hospital.

The collapse caused significant disruption in the bustling commercial area, prompting traffic police to immediately block sections of Rama IV Road to secure the scene and manage incoming traffic congestion. In addition to the road closures, authorities cordoned off the entire area to formally inspect the stability of the remaining structure, while police coordinated closely with the electricity authority to check nearby poles and wiring for potential safety risks.

Local reports later indicated that the building was part of an old shophouse complex estimated to be nearly 100 years old, which historically housed multiple local businesses including paper offerings, electrical goods, tea shops, and a travel agency.

Local shop owners noted that small fragments of plaster and brick had occasionally fallen from the structure in the past, but the catastrophic failure of the balcony was entirely unexpected. Further investigations are currently expected to determine the exact condition of the building and the root cause of the collapse.
