Tragedy at Mount Buller: Driver Killed After Falling Tree Crashes onto Car

MOUNT BULLER, Victoria — A tragic accident has claimed the life of a driver after a massive tree collapsed directly onto a moving vehicle along the winding access road leading to the Mount Buller ski resort.

The fatal incident occurred during severe weather conditions that swept across the alpine region, bringing damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall to the area.

Emergency services, including Victoria Police, paramedics, and local State Emergency Service (SES) crews, rushed to Mount Buller Road following reports of a vehicle trapped under a heavy tree trunk. Despite the quick response of emergency personnel and passersby who attempted to render first aid, the driver sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Paramedics assessed other occupants of the vehicle and surrounding motorists, but no further critical injuries were reported.

The falling tree completely crushed the roof of the vehicle, blocking both lanes of traffic and shutting down access to and from the resort for several hours. In response, heavy machinery and State Emergency Service (SES) chainsaw crews were brought in to clear the massive debris, enabling forensic collision investigators to safely examine the site.

Meteorological officials had issued severe weather warnings for Victoria's alpine districts prior to the incident, cautioning drivers about gale-force winds and saturated soil, which significantly increase the risk of uprooted trees and falling branches.
