Tragedy at Long Beach: 72-Year-Old Driver Killed After Vehicle Plunges Off Bridge

LONG BEACH, California — A quiet Wednesday morning took a devastating turn when a pickup truck crashed through a bridge guardrail and plunged into the water below in East Long Beach, claiming the life of a 72-year-old driver.

The harrowing incident has once again turned the spotlight on traffic safety in the region during what is shaping up to be another highly volatile year on local roadways.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 4:20 AM on July, 22, 2026 near the intersection of Studebaker Road and Loynes Drive.

A 2016 Toyota Tundra pickup truck was traveling northbound on Studebaker Road when it suddenly struck the south guard railing of the bridge crossing the Los Cerritos Channel. The force of the impact sent the truck careening completely off the structure, where it plunged into several feet of water.

The sheer violence of the crash ejected the 72-year-old driver from the cabin, leaving him with critical, life-threatening injuries in the channel.

Remarkably, an adult female passenger managed to escape the submerged truck. She waded through the water to reach the shore, where she successfully flagged down motorists for help.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived swiftly on the scene to pull both victims from the water. Paramedics rushed the driver to a nearby hospital, but despite aggressive life-saving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. The passenger remains hospitalized but is expected to survive.

Authorities have identified the deceased driver as a resident of Grover Beach in San Luis Obispo County. His name is currently being withheld pending final notification of next of kin.
