Three Hospitalized After Sudden Knife Attack at Shanghai Japanese Restaurant

SHANGHAI, China — Three people, including two Japanese expatriates, were rushed to the hospital after a knife-wielding man stormed a Japanese restaurant in Shanghai's bustling financial district on Tuesday afternoon, May 19, 2026.

The violent incident unfolded at around noon on the third floor of a commercial office building in the Pudong New Area. According to local police and witnesses, a 59-year-old man forced his way into the establishment armed with a fruit knife, suddenly attacking patrons and staff.

The Japanese government and corporate officials confirmed that two of the victims are Japanese men employed by the prominent real estate developer Mori Building Co., which developed the commercial complex where the attack occurred. One of the wounded men is a senior official at the firm. The third victim has been identified as a Chinese woman who was working in the vicinity.

All three victims sustained wounds during the stabbing but were transported to a nearby hospital where they are receiving emergency medical treatment. A senior official with the Japanese Foreign Ministry stated that none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

The 59-year-old suspect was successfully subdued and detained at the scene by responding police officers.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed the incident, stating that the detained suspect has a documented history of a mental disorder.

Guo emphasized that Beijing views the stabbing as an "isolated public security case" and that local departments are handling the matter strictly in accordance with the law. He also issued a firm warning to the public and international press.

"The media outlets and individuals should not make groundless speculation or unwarranted associations," Guo told reporters, deflecting questions on whether the attacker had intentionally targeted Japanese nationals.

Despite calls for calm from Chinese authorities, the attack has sent shockwaves through the local Japanese expatriate community. Tokyo has officially demanded that Beijing take active measures to guarantee the safety of Japanese citizens residing in China.

The attack occurs against a backdrop of deeply strained geopolitical ties between the two neighbors. Tensions escalated sharply following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, suggesting a potential Japanese military defense response if a conflict were to erupt over Taiwan—a claim that drew swift diplomatic and economic retaliation from Beijing.

Furthermore, the Shanghai stabbing follows a series of recent violent incidents that have heightened fears among Japanese nationals. In June 2024, a Japanese mother and child were attacked with a knife in Suzhou, and in September 2024, a 10-year-old Japanese schoolboy was fatally stabbed in Shenzhen.

Local authorities in Shanghai maintain an increased police presence around the Pudong commercial complex as the criminal investigation into the suspect’s exact motives continues.
