SINGAPORE — One person was hospitalized and approximately 48 residents were urgently evacuated after a severe fire broke out in a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat at Telok Blangah Heights. The blaze drew a swift emergency response as thick smoke filled the residential corridor.
The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) reported that they were alerted to the emergency at Block 56 Telok Blangah Heights at approximately 7:00 PM on Sunday, May 24, 2026. Upon arriving at the scene, responding firefighters observed heavy black smoke wafting out from a unit located on the ninth floor.
Because the flat was locked, SCDF personnel had to use specialized equipment to force entry into the smoke-logged home. They quickly traced the source of the fire to a mattress inside the living room and successfully extinguished the flames using a water jet.
A 21-year-old male resident was rescued from the scene. He was assessed by paramedics for burn injuries and was conveyed conscious to the Singapore General Hospital for medical treatment.
As a precautionary safety measure, the police and SCDF evacuated about 48 other residents from the affected block while operations were underway.
Ms. Rachel Ong, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, visited the location later that evening to check on the affected families. She confirmed via social media that the families were safe and well, and that critical infrastructure—including water and electricity supplies to the block—remained completely undisrupted.
Temporary housing and community support have already been arranged for the injured resident. The cause of the sudden blaze remains under investigation by both the police and the SCDF.
