Spokane Under Siege: Fast-Moving Wildfire Forces Thousands to Flee as Washington Declares State of Emergency

SPOKANE, WA — A rapidly spreading, wind-driven wildfire aggressively encroached upon northwest Spokane on Saturday afternoon, August 1, 2026 forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes under urgent "Go Now" orders. The crisis prompted Governor Bob Ferguson to declare a statewide emergency, marking the escalation of one of the worst wildfire seasons on record for Washington State.

Driven by 35 to 45 mph wind gusts and record-setting drought conditions, the fire triggered widespread chaos, blackouts, and emergency mobilizations.

Dubbed the Old Trails Fire, the blaze ignited around noon on Saturday in an open area of brush and grass near Old Trails Road and Euclid Avenue. Propelled by fierce winds and low humidity, the flames raced through Riverside State Park, burning up to the edge of the Spokane River. By late afternoon, the fire achieved what emergency crews feared most: it jumped across the river directly into the city limits.

"When the sun sets and the sun rises, we are going to be in shock," said Major General Gent Welsh, Washington's adjutant general, describing the conditions as the worst he had witnessed in his 38-year career.

As the fire roared into residential zones, emergency workers frantically yelled at neighbors to run. Thick smoke completely blotted out the sun, turning the sky into an eerie backdrop of orange and black as trees and homes caught fire. By Saturday night, the inferno had scorched more than 3,500 acres with zero containment.

Spokane County authorities quickly raised the evacuation threat to Level 3 ("Go Now") for significant portions of northern Spokane, encompassing thousands of residents.

Major institutions faced immediate danger. Whitworth University was evacuated door-to-door, and the city was forced to clear out critical facilities, including water reclamation plants, a waste-to-energy plant, and the local Department of Veterans Affairs hospital.

To protect the grid from sparking further blazes, utilities provider Avista implemented public safety power shutoffs. Compounded by fire damage, the outages left over 60,000 people in eastern Washington without power.

The Spokane Convention Center was quickly converted into an emergency shelter, where the American Red Cross and local transit authorities rushed to provide medical relief and housing for displaced families. While structural losses have been confirmed, city officials have thankfully reported no injuries or fatalities at this time.

The catastrophe in Spokane unfolds amidst an unprecedentedly brutal fire season across Washington State. Earlier in the day, the National Weather Service issued its first-ever "Particularly Dangerous Situation" Red Flag Alert for Eastern Washington—a critical designation reserved for the most extreme, uncontrollable fire weather conditions.

"Throughout the state of Washington, we're seeing fires raging," stated Public Lands Commissioner Dave Upthegrove, noting that roughly 450,000 acres have already burned this summer. The Old Trails Fire is just one of several massive complexes stretching approximately 4,000 assigned personnel to their limits.

Governor Ferguson’s emergency declaration includes an immediate, strict prohibition on most outdoor and agricultural burning through the end of September. To aid overwhelmed local crews, units of the Washington National Guard are rapidly mobilizing to the fire lines.

With the wind continuing to howl into Sunday morning, local law enforcement has warned evacuated residents to prepare for an extended displacement as firefighters battle to halt the fire's destructive path.
