GOSPORT, Hampshire — A massive firefighting operation is underway after a dramatic inferno tore through a derelict building in Gosport early on Thursday morning, June 11, 2026 causing the roof to completely collapse and sending thick plumes of smoke across the town.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene following dozens of urgent calls from nearby residents who woke to the sound of structural timbers cracking and loud explosions.
According to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, multiple appliances, including an aerial ladder platform and specialized high-volume pumping units, were dispatched to the site at approximately 3:45 a.m.
Upon arrival, first responders found the two-story abandoned property completely engulfed in flames. Within twenty minutes of the crews' arrival, the intensity of the blaze compromised the building’s structural integrity, resulting in a dramatic, partial collapse of the roof.
Because of the severe collapse hazard, commanders quickly pulled back firefighters and pivoted to entirely defensive tactics. Crews focused heavy water jets from the aerial platform onto the core of the inferno while simultaneously working to prevent the flames from spreading to closely neighboring residential blocks.
The massive smoke plume, visible from across Portsmouth Harbour, prompted emergency services to issue an urgent warning to local residents, advising everyone in the vicinity to keep their windows and doors firmly shut.
The emergency response has also triggered significant traffic delays for the morning commute. Police have completely sealed off the immediate roads to establish a safe perimeter for emergency vehicles and supply hoses running from local hydrants. Commuters are being heavily diverted, with local bus routes facing substantial delays and cancellations.
As the property has been derelict and unsecured for an extended period, the building was believed to be empty at the time of the outbreak. Parmedics remain on standby at the scene, though no injuries have been reported so far.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Due to the unstable nature of the remaining structure, fire investigators and structural engineers will be unable to enter the site until the building is deemed structurally safe. Local police are treating the incident as suspicious and are appealing to anyone with dash cam or CCTV footage from the area to come forward.
