Prince Harry’s court battle against British tabloids reaches final chapter

Tens of millions of dollars are on the line as Prince Harry returned to court Monday for the third and final chapter in his legal effort to rein in British tabloids.

Harry, also known as the Duke of Sussex, is one of seven high-profile plaintiffs accusing the publisher of the Daily Mail of invading their privacy using unlawful information-gathering tactics, including allegations that Associated Newspapers hired private investigators to bug their cars, obtain private records, and eavesdrop on phone calls.

The publisher denies the allegations and calls them preposterous. Attorney David Sherborne told the court there was a decades-long culture within Associated Newspapers of unlawfully gathering information “that wrecked the lives of so many.” He argued that the company’s denials, destruction of records, and “masses upon masses of missing documents” prevented the claimants from learning what the newspapers had done, adding that the company “knew” its denials were not true.

The trial in London’s High Court is expected to last nine weeks, and Harry is returning to the witness box for the second time since making history in 2023 by becoming the first senior member of the royal family to testify in more than a century. The case is linked to the broader phone-hacking scandal that investigators say involved journalists intercepting voicemails from around the turn of the century for more than a decade. Harry previously won a court judgment in 2023 that condemned the publishers of the Daily Mirror for “widespread and habitual” phone hacking, and last year Rupert Murdoch’s flagship UK tabloid made an unprecedented apology and agreed to pay substantial damages to settle a privacy lawsuit.

Alongside the legal battle, Harry’s efforts to reform the media are personal as well as public. He has said press intrusion played a role in his mother Princess Diana’s death in 1997 and that sustained attacks on his wife, Meghan, contributed to the family leaving royal life and relocating to the United States in 2020.

The trial also comes as Harry tries to repair a damaged relationship with his family following his move to America and the publication of his 2023 memoir “Spare” and other public comments. A reunion during this court visit appears unlikely, with Harry expected to be limited to the opening of the trial and early testimony.
