Petaluma Crash: 3 Severely Injured, Highway 101 Southbound Blocked

PETALUMA, California — A devastating multi-vehicle collision severely injured three people and completely paralyzed southbound traffic on Highway 101 in Petaluma on Sunday morning, June 7, 2026. Emergency crews spent hours rescuing trapped occupants and clearing extensive debris, triggering massive traffic back-ups throughout the area.

The accident occurred just before 9:30 AM on Southbound Highway 101, near the Lakeville Highway off-ramp. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the wreck involved at least three vehicles, including a commercial box truck and two passenger sedans, that collided at high speed.

The force of the impact left one sedan completely crumpled, trapping multiple occupants inside the crushed wreckage.

Petaluma Fire Department crews arrived quickly on the scene and immediately initiated a complex extrication operation. Firefighter’s utilized specialized heavy hydraulic rescue tools—commonly known as the "Jaws of Life"—to cut through the twisted metal of the vehicle's frame. It took emergency responders nearly 40 minutes of deliberate effort to carefully free the trapped passengers.

Paramedics at the scene confirmed that three individuals sustained severe, life-threatening injuries. Due to the critical nature of their trauma, emergency dispatchers requested immediate air support.

Two medical helicopters landed directly on the closed lanes of the highway to transport the most critically injured patients to regional trauma centers. The third victim was rushed by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved, pending notification of family members. Following the crash, CHP officers closed all southbound lanes of Highway 101, diverting a heavy flow of Sunday morning traffic onto local Petaluma streets. The sudden influx of vehicles quickly overwhelmed side roads, creating gridlock through the downtown sector and along alternative routes.

The major accident investigation team remained on the highway for several hours to document skid marks, map the debris field, and determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the collision. Initial reports suggest that sudden braking in the fast lane may have triggered a chain-reaction rear-end shunt, though investigators are also looking into whether speed or distracted driving played a role.

Hazardous material crews were also deployed to clean up significant oil and fuel spills resulting from the ruptured engines before the roadway could safely be reopened to the public.
