Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to announce later this month the final date for Palestinian legislative elections, marking the first such vote in more than two decades, according to a political figure cited in reporting.
The expected vote date is 28 November, the head of the Palestinian political movement New Path (Masar Jadid) said in a statement. The legislative election would come after years of political stagnation and would be held under Abbas’s timetable following multiple delays.
Separately, Abbas has also been preparing for presidential elections, which earlier decrees have indicated would take place in early 2027. Abbas, now 90, has been in power since 2005, with his term having expired long ago, while he has continued to rule by decree amid criticism at home and abroad.
The reporting also notes that conditions for elections remain contested, including concerns about whether all political movements can compete on equal terms, and whether security services influence or limit the activities of emerging groups.
