Overnight Terror in Odesa: Russian Missile Strike Hits Residential Homes, Injuring at Least 8

ODESA, Ukraine — Residents in the southern port city of Odesa awoke to heavy blasts overnight on Sunday, August 9, 2026, as Russian forces launched a coordinated barrage of ballistic missiles and strike drones. The early-morning bombardment damaged multiple apartment complexes and residential homes across two city districts, leaving at least eight people injured.

The combined air raid began around 3:30 a.m. local time and extended over an hour. Explosions shook central and residential neighborhoods as local air defense batteries engaged incoming targets. According to regional military officials, the salvo involved several dozen missiles—including Iskander-M and Oniks systems—alongside swarms of attack drones launched from occupied Crimea and the Black Sea region.

The high-impact strikes caused severe damage to several multi-story residential buildings. The blasts shattered hundreds of windows, collapsed walls, and ignited fierce fires that swept through nearby parking areas, destroying civilian vehicles.

"Residential buildings have been damaged in several districts of the city, and cars were destroyed by fire," confirmed Serhii Lysak, Head of the Odesa City Military Administration. "All emergency services and municipal teams were immediately deployed to assist residents."

Emergency responders and search-and-rescue teams worked through the darkness to extinguish burning structures and extract survivors from damaged apartments. Regional authorities reported that seven of the injured were hospitalized in moderate condition, with most suffering from shrapnel wounds and trauma caused by flying glass.

The localized strikes also impacted surrounding municipal utilities, leaving parts of Odesa temporarily without electricity as power crews worked to isolate damaged grid infrastructure. Local authorities established emergency aid hubs in the affected neighborhoods to supply shelter, warm meals, and temporary window coverings for residents whose homes were rendered uninhabitable.

Law enforcement officers and forensic teams have begun documenting the damage to collect evidence for ongoing war crimes investigations. Ukrainian officials once again appealed to international allies for additional air defense systems and interceptor missiles to shield civilian infrastructure from persistent long-range strikes.
