Overnight Escalation: 3 Killed, Including Child, as US Resumes Air Strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island

TEHRAN — A heavy wave of renewed U.S. military airstrikes across southern Iran early Thursday morning, July 30, 2026 has left three family members dead, including a two-year-old child, after a missile struck a residential home on the strategic island of Qeshm in the Persian Gulf.

The strikes mark a major escalation in hostilities following a brief five-night pause in the air campaign. According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency and local medical officials from the Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences, the deadly strike leveled a home in the Chah Tangu neighborhood of Qeshm Island.

Hormozgan Deputy Governor Ahmad Nafisi confirmed that search and rescue operations have wrapped up at the site. The casualties were identified as a local couple—a father and mother—and their two-year-old child. Two other children from the same family survived the blast with injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment.

Residents on Qeshm reported hearing at least three massive explosions around 3:50 AM local time as the ordnance hit the urban area, prompting immediate chaos as neighbors rushed to clear rubble before emergency services arrived.

The bombardment was part of what the U.S. military's Central Command (CENTCOM) described as a "heavy wave of strikes" launched at approximately 8:00 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday. In an official statement, CENTCOM stated the operation was successfully completed by 10:00 PM Eastern Time and was conducted in "powerful response" to Iranian missile attacks aimed at U.S. forces stationed at a base in Jordan a day earlier.

While U.S. defense officials claimed the precision strikes strictly targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) assets—including military command centers, coastal surveillance systems, drone facilities, and maritime capabilities—the civilian deaths on Qeshm Island have rapidly drawn fierce condemnation from Tehran.

The U.S. air assault was not limited to Qeshm Island. Heavy explosions and structural damage were reported across multiple provinces in Iran's south and southwest, focusing heavily on regions bordering the Persian Gulf and the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

In Khuzestan Province, strategic locations in the southwestern oil-rich cities of Abadan and Ahvaz were hit, with local officials reporting that the strikes triggered severe, widespread power outages across Ahvaz. Meanwhile, exploded munitions and strikes were recorded near the cities of Kazerun and Farashband in Fars Province. Additionally, in Bushehr Province, state media confirmed independent blasts rocking parts of the coastal city, which is home to key industrial and maritime infrastructure.

The latest round of violence follows warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump, who promised to hit Iranian capabilities "very hard" after regional proxies and Iranian forces pushed back against U.S. military presence in the Middle East.

With regional peace panels strained and air defense networks on high alert across the Persian Gulf, the civilian deaths on Qeshm Island are expected to complicate international diplomatic channels as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian urged citizens to "stand firm" against foreign aggression.
