Nigeria Dismantles Industrial-Scale Meth Lab; 10 Arrested in Record-Breaking Bust

ABUJA, Nigeria — In a landmark operation that underscores the growing complexity of the global drug trade, Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully dismantled the largest clandestine methamphetamine laboratory ever discovered in the country. The raid, which followed months of intensive intelligence gathering, resulted in the seizure of narcotics and chemical materials valued at approximately US$363 million.

The operation, carried out over 48 hours, targeted a remote farm located in the Abidagba forest of Ogun State, alongside linked residential properties in an upscale Lagos neighborhood. Elite operatives from the agency's Special Operations Unit (SOU) executed the raids, uncovering an industrial-scale production facility hidden deep within the forest.

Authorities confirmed the arrest of 10 suspects in total. Among those detained at the Ogun State farm were three Mexican nationals described by officials as specialized "meth cooks". The alleged mastermind behind the operation, a Nigerian national named Anochili Innocent, was taken into custody at his residence in Lagos.

NDLEA Chief Mohamed Buba Marwa highlighted the disturbing evolution of drug cartels operating within Nigeria, noting a deliberate strategy to recruit foreign technical expertise to establish production bases locally.

"We are fully aware of the shifting tactics of these cartels, including the disturbing trend of hiring South American cartel specialists to set up production factories in our rural communities," Marwa said in an official statement.

The seizure of 2,400kg of methamphetamine and various chemical precursors represents a significant blow to this transnational syndicate. Officials believe this raid highlights Nigeria's increasingly prominent, yet concerning, role as both a transit and manufacturing hub in the international illegal drugs market.

As the investigation continues, the NDLEA has reiterated its commitment to dismantling such networks and warned global drug syndicates that their activities will be met with aggressive enforcement.
