Morning Rush Hour Horror: Fatal SUV Smashup Cripples EDSA-Quezon City Traffic

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — A chaotic multi-vehicle pileup disrupted the Friday morning rush hour along the northbound lane of EDSA near Oliveros Drive in Balintawak, leaving one passenger dead and multiple others injured.

The violent chain-reaction crash caused a massive gridlock that paralyzed a major stretch of the capital’s busiest thoroughfare.

According to initial logs from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Traffic Sector 1 and the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), the incident occurred early Friday morning, July 17, 2026 when an out-of-control sport utility vehicle (SUV) triggered the pileup.

According to witness accounts and preliminary reports, the chain-reaction crash unfolded in a rapid succession of violent impacts. The incident began when the speeding SUV allegedly lost control and slammed heavily into the back of a pickup truck. The sheer force of this initial collision caused the SUV to spin repeatedly across the highway lanes. Unable to stop, the rotating vehicle reeled backward, violently ramming an oncoming taxi and two trailing motorcycles before finally coming to a halt.

First responders rushed to the scene to pull victims from the twisted wreckage. Authorities confirmed that of the three occupants inside the rogue SUV, one succumbed to fatal injuries.

Emergency medical teams treated eight other individuals at the site—including the remaining SUV passengers, the taxi driver, and the motorcycle riders—before rushing them to the East Avenue Medical Center for urgent care. Authorities have temporarily withheld the identities of the victims pending notification of their immediate families.

MMDA Scene Report: "The impact left the SUV entirely unrecognizable and scattered heavy debris across the highway. The clearing operations required specialized towing equipment to haul away the severely crushed frames."

The accident effectively blocked two primary northbound lanes of EDSA, choking off traffic right as the morning peak hours commenced. Commuters faced hours of delays, with the bumper-to-bumper queue stretching back several kilometers before emergency crews could fully clear the lanes and wash down fluid spills.

The QCPD Traffic Sector 1 has launched a full-scale investigation into the crash. Investigators are looking into mechanical failure, driving under the influence, or extreme speeding as potential triggers for the fatal smashup.
