More than 250,000 people flee their homes in France and Spain as wildfires burn

More than 250,000 people have fled their homes as fast-moving wildfires burn across parts of France and Spain. Spain declared a national emergency in the Madrid region as fires continued to spread, forcing evacuations in and around towns west of the capital. In France, authorities ordered evacuations linked to blazes near Bordeaux, including the Cap Ferret peninsula, where residents and tourists were moved out “village by village.” Officials said extreme heat and strong winds are driving the fires and making them difficult to control.
