Midnight Horror in Chatuchak: At Least 30 Dead After Fire Rips Through Packed Ladpao Restaurant

BANGKOK — A devastating inferno tore through a packed beer house and restaurant in Bangkok’s northern Chatuchak district just minutes into Monday morning, July 13, 2026 killing at least 30 people and injuring dozens more in one of the city's deadliest commercial fires in recent years.

The blaze erupted at approximately 12:02 AM at Rong Beer Na Ladprao, a popular nightlife and dining venue near Soi Lat Phrao 1 Road. The establishment was crowded with roughly 300 patrons enjoying live music when the midnight horror unfolded.

According to surviving musicians who were performing on stage at the time, the disaster began with smoke pouring from a circuit breaker near the stage. Seconds later, the venue plunged into a complete blackout, followed immediately by a loud explosion.

Flames spread with terrifying speed, rapidly engulfing the single-story concrete structure. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who rushed to the scene alongside Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, noted that the fire fed heavily on flammable ceiling decorations. The burning materials quickly blanketed the entire venue in thick, highly toxic black smoke.

As the fire blocked the main front exit, thick smoke caused immediate, widespread panic. Emergency responders reported that while two rear fire exits were structurally available, the evacuation route was severely compromised. One exit near the kitchen was allegedly obstructed by stacked beer crates, while another was blocked by a table.

In the blinding smoke and chaos, a massive wave of patrons fled toward the back of the venue, mistakenly seeking refuge in the restrooms. It proved to be a fatal trap. "Most of the victims ran to the back, to toilets with no exit," Prime Minister Anutin told reporters from the scene. "It was likely due to sheer panic because the fire and smoke filled the main room so quickly."

Firefighters managed to bring the raging flames under control within 30 to 45 minutes, but by the time rescue teams from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and local disaster units breached the building, it had been completely gutted.

Emergency personnel discovered a grim scene, finding dozens of victims lying prone near the restrooms and on the main floor. The vast majority of the deceased are believed to have succumbed rapidly to smoke inhalation. Officials have confirmed that the casualties include at least 18 women and 9 men, with formal identification efforts still underway for the remaining victims.

Of the 63 people rushed to 16 area hospitals with severe burns and respiratory trauma, at least 22 remain in critical condition.

While Governor Chadchart clarified that the venue held a valid live music license and had passed a routine safety inspection in April, authorities have launched a comprehensive forensic investigation. Investigators will closely examine why the emergency exit paths were obstructed and whether the venue’s building materials violated strict fire codes.
