Massive Landslides Strike West Sikkim: Heavy Debris Blocks Rimbi and Singlitam

GANGTOK, India — Massive landslides triggered by torrential monsoon rains struck the Rimbi and Singlitam areas of West Sikkim, dumping heavy mountain debris across key transit corridors and halting regional traffic early on Sunday morning, August 16, 2026.

The falling rock and mud blocked vital road linkages, stranding vehicles and raising severe concerns regarding transportation, supply lines, and public safety across the district.

The landslips occurred following hours of incessant rainfall across the high-altitude terrain of West Sikkim. Boulders, loose soil, and uprooted trees cascaded down steep mountain slopes, burying large stretches of the primary arterial roads connecting Rimbi and Singlitam to major urban hubs like Pelling and Geyzing.

Local authorities immediately mobilized heavy earth-moving equipment, including excavators and bulldozers, to clear the accumulated rubble. However, persistent rainfall and unstable hill slopes continue to hamper clearance operations and pose risks to rescue personnel.

"The volume of debris in both Rimbi and Singlitam is substantial, and continuous rockfalls are making clearing operations extremely challenging. We urge commuters to avoid non-essential travel in these corridors until the routes are declared safe."— Sikkim Public Works Department Official

While no casualties have been officially reported so far, the disruption has severely disrupted daily movement for locals, tourists, and commercial transport.

The massive landslides have caused severe traffic disruptions, completely cutting off key routes between Rimbi and surrounding settlements and stranding dozens of private vehicles and passenger buses. In response, Border Roads Organization (BRO) personnel and local emergency teams are working jointly on emergency clearance operations to clear major blockages and restore single-lane access where feasible. Meanwhile, district authorities have issued travel advisories warning of potential further slope failures across vulnerable stretches in West Sikkim due to heavily saturated soil conditions.

Disaster management teams remain deployed on high alert across the affected zones to monitor slope stability, assist stranded travelers, and oversee clearance operations as weather conditions permit.
