Major Forest Fire Breaks Out Near Bukit SUK in Shah Alam

SHAH ALAM — Firefighters in Selangor were called into urgent action on Monday, August 17, 2026 after a major hill forest fire broke out near Bukit SUK in Section 14, Shah Alam.

The blaze, which engulfed approximately 2.8 hectares (7 acres) of dense hilly vegetation, erupted in close proximity to the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) premises and the landmark Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque (State Mosque). Thick plumes of smoke billowed into the sky over Persiaran Masjid, alarming city center residents and motorists as social media clips of the encroaching flames quickly went viral.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) received an emergency call alerting them to the blaze at 1:01 PM. Fire engines from the Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Shah Alam) arrived at the scene within minutes.

According to JBPM Selangor Assistant Director of Operations, Ashrul Riezal Asbar, 10 officers and firefighters were deployed to combat the flames. The crew operated using a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT), and a water tanker.

"Firefighters on the ground used fire beaters, portable water pumps, and constructed fire breaks along the terrain to stop the blaze from advancing toward nearby administrative complex structures," said Ashrul Riezal.

Water supply was drawn directly from fire hydrants managed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) alongside mobile water tankers to sustain non-stop firefighting efforts through the evening. Authorities confirmed that the forest fire was restricted entirely to the hilly terrain. No building structures were breached, and no injuries or casualties were reported.

By Monday night, responders had successfully contained over 60% of the blaze, working continuously to douse remaining hot spots and secure the area against potential reignition.

Investigations into the origin of the fire are ongoing, with local authorities urging the public to refrain from open burning during dry conditions. Meanwhile, monitoring teams remain stationed at the site overnight to prevent residual embers from sparking new flames along the slope.
