Inferno Near Lake Garda: Over 200 Evacuated as Wildfire Rages Out of Control

TIGNALE, Italy — A massive wildfire raging across the steep, mountainous terrain overlooking the western shores of Lake Garda forced the emergency evacuation of over 200 people, including dozens of international tourists, as emergency crews battled night and day to contain the advancing flames.

The blaze ignited late Friday evening, August 7, 2026 in the municipality of Tignale, situated within the popular Alto Garda region. Driven by dry conditions and erratic wind gusts reaching up to 40 kilometers per hour, the fire spread rapidly across heavily forested hillsides, threatening local residential homes and resort accommodation complexes.

Emergency responders, including local firefighters, Civil Protection teams, and forest Carabinieri, were mobilized to secure the area as the mayor of Tignale, Daniele Bonassi, described the scene as horrifying.

"The blaze remains uncontrolled due to strong shifting winds," emergency officials reported. "Operations are currently concentrated on holding containment lines and preventing the flames from engulfing nearby residential structures."

Overnight evacuations targeted holiday rentals and large resort properties, including the La Forca complex, where emergency personnel guided vacationers and residents away from approaching smoke and flames. Water-bombing aircraft, including specialized Canadair planes and firefighting helicopters, were deployed at daybreak to dump water drawn directly from Lake Garda onto inaccessible mountain slopes.

Although no injuries or casualties have been reported, officials emphasize that firefighters face immense challenges due to prolonged severe heat. Large swaths of Northern Italy have endured temperatures exceeding 40°C, leaving surrounding vegetation brittle and extraordinarily flammable after weeks of minimal rainfall.

Authorities continue to monitor air quality and ground movement along the western shore as investigation teams work to determine the origin of the fire. Travelers in the surrounding region are advised to avoid mountain access routes to ensure emergency vehicles and water tenders maintain unobstructed passage to active fire zones.

As firefighting efforts persist through the weekend, regional tourism representatives and municipal leaders are working to coordinate alternative housing arrangements and support services for the displaced guests. Local authorities have emphasized that while popular lakeside resort areas further down the coast remain open, strict fire bans and heightened vigilance will stay in effect across Lombardy’s mountain trails until the heatwave breaks and containment lines are fully secured.
