Inferno in West Kalimantan: Massive Blaze Devastates Local Market

BENGKAYANG, Indonesia — A devastating late-night inferno swept through the busy Sungai Duri Market in the Bengkayang Regency of West Kalimantan on Thursday night, August 20, 2026, destroying dozens of commercial properties and paralyzing regional transit.

The fire erupted around 6:30 p.m. local time along Jalan Wiraguna in the Suka Damai area. Fueled by strong winds and dense clusters of aged wooden shop-houses, the flames rapidly spread across the commercial district. Eyewitnesses reported that the intense blaze even leaped across the adjacent national highway, setting fire to storefronts on the opposite side of the road and sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky.

The disaster prompted an extensive multi-agency response, bringing together local volunteer firefighters, community members, and 77 joint personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and National Police (Polri). A fleet of 33 fire engines dispatched from neighboring districts—including Singkawang, Mempawah, and Pontianak—worked continuously through the night to contain the blaze. Firefighting teams finally brought the inferno under control around 4:10 a.m. Friday morning before initiating cooling operations to prevent reigniting.

Preliminary evaluations by the Bengkayang Regional Police indicate that roughly 50 properties—comprising shophouses, grocery stores, electronics sellers, pharmacies, hardware stores, and residences—were reduced to charred frames. Financial damages are currently estimated at approximately 70 billion IDR.

Because the market sits along the main national corridor connecting the provincial capital of Pontianak to Singkawang, authorities were forced to close the road to ensure public safety, resulting in widespread traffic gridlock.

No fatalities have been reported, but tens of families and shop owners face severe financial losses. Local police have cordoned off the area to conduct forensic investigations into the precise cause of the outbreak, while community leaders coordinate emergency relief efforts for affected store owners.

Regional government officials have pledged to expedite financial assistance and temporary relocation support for affected business owners to jumpstart local economic recovery. In response to the scale of destruction, provincial authorities are also planning a comprehensive review of fire safety standards across Kalimantan's traditional markets, focusing on upgrading aging electrical infrastructure and establishing dedicated fire hydrant networks in high-density commercial zones.
