PORIRUA — A quiet suburban street in Tītahi Bay became the scene of a devastating emergency early on Saturday morning, June 20, 2026 as a massive, fast-moving blaze completely engulfed what is believed to be two residential properties.
Emergency services were flooded with multiple 111 calls just after 3:30 AM from residents waking up to loud popping sounds and the unmistakable orange glow of a rapidly spreading fire.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) initially dispatched three appliances to the scene. However, upon arrival, crews immediately upgraded the incident to a second alarm as intense flames leaped between two closely situated homes, threatening neighboring structures.
At the peak of the incident, more than eight fire trucks, including support vehicles and a command unit, were deployed to battle the inferno. Firefighters faced challenging conditions, with thick, acrid smoke blanketing the Tītahi Bay area and strong coastal gusts feeding the flames.
Neighboring residents described a chaotic scene as people rushed into the street to escape the heat. "I woke up to what sounded like fireworks, but when I looked out the window, the back of the neighboring house was completely alive with fire," said one local resident. "It went up incredibly fast. Within minutes, the roof looked like it was melting."
Police and Wellington Free Ambulance personnel also rushed to the scene to assist with evacuations and establish a safety perimeter. Police cordons remain in place around the immediate area, and commuters are being asked to avoid the vicinity to allow emergency vehicles clear access.
Miraculously, initial reports indicate that all occupants of both dwellings managed to evacuate safely. Paramedics treated three individuals at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, but no serious injuries or hospitalizations have been reported.
By 6:00 AM, heavy principal fire activity had been suppressed, though crews remained on-site dampening down hotspots and securing unstable structures.
The cause of the blaze is currently unknown. FENZ fire investigators have been notified and are expected to establish a scene examination later today once the structures are deemed safe to enter. With two local families now displaced, community members are already organizing local support and donation drives to assist those who have lost everything in the blaze.
