BORDEAUX, France — A fast-moving, "war zone"-like wildfire has torn through the tinder-dry pine forests of southwest France, forcing the emergency evacuation of roughly 20,000 residents and holidaymakers from popular tourist hotspots along the Atlantic coast.

The blaze, which erupted near the village of Saumos and rapidly advanced toward the scenic Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula—famous for its vast sand dunes, cycling paths, and oyster shacks—has already scorched more than 31 square kilometers (12 square miles) of land.

The inferno triggered an immediate crisis overnight as the flames raced toward vacation resorts and campgrounds packed with summer tourists. Over 10,000 people were initially moved to safety in the dark hours of Wednesday into Thursday, July 23, 2026. As the situation escalated, local authorities expanded the order, evacuating the entire village of Claouey and multiple surrounding campsites.

Sophie Brocas, the prefect for the surrounding Gironde region, confirmed that the sweeping evacuation operations ultimately involved an estimated 20,000 people. Municipalities across the region have scrambled to open emergency reception and respite centers to house the displaced crowds.

"It feels like being in a war zone," said John Wilmes, a tourist who had been renting a vacation house in the area, describing the rapidly darkening skies and chaotic race to safety.

While authorities reported late Thursday that the fire was successfully contained north of Lège, it remains completely out of control. Firefighters face heavily unfavorable conditions, hampered by shifting wind directions and erratic, dry gusts. Miraculously, no injuries have been reported so far.

Initial investigations by French police suggest the fire may have been accidentally triggered by a brush-clearing machine. However, officials emphasize that the underlying catalyst is an unprecedented ecological crisis.

Following a succession of intense heatwaves that began early in the spring, France’s forests are locked in severe water stress. Tinder-box conditions have turned the countryside into a powder keg. According to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, France has suffered more than 12,500 individual wildfires since the start of the year, burning nearly 44,000 hectares of land.
