LEICESTERSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM — A massive emergency response was triggered in the early hours of Saturday morning after a significant fire erupted at the Thurmaston Shopping Centre, causing a partial structural collapse of a major retail unit.
The Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service deployed eight fire engines, two aerial ladder appliances, and over 40 firefighters to combat the fast-moving inferno.
Emergency control rooms began receiving multiple urgent calls at approximately 6:00 AM on Saturday, June 20, 2026 reporting a large fire rapidly taking hold of several retail units within the shopping park.
As the flames intensified, the roof of the Mountain Warehouse outlet suffered a catastrophic collapse. Thick, billowing plumes of black smoke dominated the skyline, visible from across the surrounding area. Due to the heavy smoke travel, emergency services issued an immediate warning to nearby residents, advising them to keep all windows and doors securely closed.
While fire crews successfully managed to extinguish the main body of the blaze, a large safety cordon remains firmly in place around the most severely damaged sections of the retail park.
The incident has caused major operational disruption right at the start of the weekend shopping rush. The Mountain Warehouse store remains closed indefinitely after being heavily damaged by the structural roof collapse, while neighboring retailers Marks & Spencer (M&S) and Greggs were also forced to stay closed due to their close proximity and potential smoke damage.
However, the shopping centre car park has since been partially reopened, and some of the unaffected stores are expected to resume trading later today.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the early-morning blaze. Fire investigators are currently on-site, working alongside local authorities to safely navigate the compromised structure and determine the exact cause of the ignition.
