Horror in Brazil: 21-Year-Old Woman Dies After Tragic Rope Jump Accident

LIMEIRA, Brazil — A weekend excursion turned into an unimaginable nightmare when a 21-year-old woman plunged 40 meters (130 feet) to her death after a private adventure company allegedly launched her from a bridge without securing her safety rope.

The horrifying incident occurred on Saturday morning, June 13, 2026, at the Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge)—a disused rail crossing known for extreme sports in the interior of São Paulo state. The victim, identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, had traveled to the site with her fiancé to participate in the rope-jumping event.

Video footage captured at the scene by onlookers shows a routine preparation transforming into instant panic. Crew members are seen carrying Maria horizontally by her arms and legs toward the edge of the platform.

A split second after they released her into the canyon, bystanders realized the fatal mistake. In the recording, voices can be heard frantically screaming, "Guys, the rope! The rope, people, the rope!" The camera then pans across the platform to reveal the vital safety line still lying completely detached on the floor of the bridge.

Maria plummeted into the rocky ravine below, suffering multiple catastrophic injuries. Emergency responders, including firefighters and paramedics, rushed to the scene but pronounced her dead at the site. Upon witnessing the tragedy, her fiancé became severely ill from shock and required immediate hospital treatment.

Following the fatal plunge, some of the operators responsible for the event reportedly fled into the nearby wooded brush. Police mobilized an Águia helicopter to track them down, ultimately detaining six individuals linked to the organization.

Three of those men—aged 27, 32, and 42—have been formally arrested and charged with homicide with implied malice, a legal classification applied when individuals knowingly accept a potentially fatal risk. Maria was a recent graduate in physical education and sports management from Jandira in Greater São Paulo. She frequently shared her love for physical activity, well-being, and nature online.

Shortly before stepping onto the platform, she posted a photo of her jump wristbands on her Instagram Stories. In a lighthearted, joking tone, she captioned it: "Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge?"

The post has since gone viral, drawing immense grief and shock from the public.

The tragedy has reignited severe scrutiny over safety protocols and regulations for extreme sports in Brazil. São Paulo police delegate Andrea Dantas Levy confirmed that the private company, Entre Cordas, which was charging roughly $35 USD per jump, had no official authorization to operate at the bridge.

Limeira Mayor Murilo Félix stated the municipality will lodge a formal complaint with the federal government to enforce stricter access control over the federal area.

"It is necessary to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to an area that has presented known risks for years and still lacks the necessary protection measures," Félix said.
