High-Speed Chaos on BTE: Bus Driver and Two Motorists Hospitalized After Morning Crash

SINGAPORE — A violent multi-vehicle collision on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BTE) dispatched three people to the hospital early Wednesday morning, August 19, 2026 severely snarling traffic during the peak rush-hour commute.

The accident, which involved a public transit bus and two private vehicles, occurred shortly after 7:00 AM along the northbound stretch of the BTE near the Mandai Road exit. The impact was severe enough to crush the front end of the bus and shatter several side windows, leaving vehicle wreckage and glass scattered across multiple lanes.

Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) officers and Traffic Police units rushed to the scene following urgent calls from eyewitnesses. First responders had to assist in extricating the bus driver, who was trapped in his seat following the force of the front-end impact.

Emergency Medical Services evaluated several individuals on-site. Paramedics subsequently conveyed the bus driver and two motorists—drivers of the light vehicles involved—to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. All three remained conscious during transport, suffering from chest trauma, limb injuries, and neck strain, though none of the injuries were immediately deemed life-threatening.

The crash triggered massive tailbacks stretching several kilometers towards the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) junction. Traffic Police officers blocked off three affected lanes for over an hour to allow emergency personnel to treat the injured, clear heavy debris, and tow the damaged vehicles away.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the crash. Preliminary investigations suggest one of the cars may have braked suddenly due to merging traffic, causing a chain-reaction rear-end collision. Traffic Police are currently reviewing dash cam footage from nearby vehicles to confirm the cause.

Public transport operators confirmed that alternative bus arrangements were made for affected commuters following the incident, while express service routes running along the expressway experienced significant delays throughout the morning. Land Transport Authority (LTA) officials reiterated warnings to motorists to maintain safe tailgating distances and remain extra vigilant during peak transit hours, emphasizing that sudden lane changes on high-speed arterial roads remain a primary driver of major expressway pileups.
