BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — An Independence Day celebration transformed into a scene of horror late Saturday night, July 4, 2026 when gunfire erupted in Brooklyn's Coney Island neighborhood, leaving eight people wounded. Among the victims are four young children, the youngest of whom is just six years old.
The mass shooting occurred roughly an hour after a nearby fireworks display marking the nation’s holiday, shattering what had been a festive atmosphere.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), emergency dispatchers received multiple frantic 911 calls at approximately 10:37 p.m. reporting gunfire on the 2900 block of West 31st Street, near the Seapark Apartments.
Responding officers arrived to find a chaotic scene with eight individuals suffering from varying degrees of gunshot wounds. Paramedics and emergency medical services rushed all eight victims to local area hospitals.
Authorities confirmed that the victims span ages from 6 to 37 years old. While seven of the injured are currently listed in stable condition, a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.
The four young victims include a 6-year-old boy who sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach and a 7-year-old boy shot in both legs. Additionally, a 12-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, while a 14-year-old boy was wounded in the thigh.
The remaining adult victims—two men aged 33 and 37, and a 25-year-old woman—is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The motive behind the holiday violence remains entirely unclear, and police have not yet released the identities of the victims. While investigators successfully recovered a firearm at the scene, no arrests have been made as of Sunday afternoon.
The NYPD's investigation is active and ongoing. Detectives are scouring the area for surveillance footage and urging anyone with information or eyewitness accounts to come forward to assist in tracking down the shooter.
