Flash Flood Havoc: Over 15 Residential Quarters Wrecked Near NEEPCO Project in Arunachal

YAZALI, ARUNACHAL PRADESH — Intense overnight rainfall between June 23 and June 24, 2026 has triggered devastating flash floods and widespread inundation in the Poosa area near the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) project site. Located in the Yazali Circle of Arunachal Pradesh's newly formed Keyi Panyor district, the area has suffered extensive infrastructure damage, with at least 15 to 18 residential quarters left severely damaged or destroyed.

According to officials from the State Disaster Management Department, the localized catastrophe unfolded when an under-construction retaining wall collapsed under the sheer force of the downpour. The breach allowed a massive volume of floodwater to rush directly into the low-lying housing colony and surrounding residential areas associated with the NEEPCO project.

The sudden surge of water left little time for residents to evacuate. State Disaster Management Secretary Dani Sulu confirmed that three individuals are currently reported missing following the deluge. While preliminary local reports suggest there may have been a loss of life, police and district authorities have emphasized that these details are still undergoing official verification as search efforts continue.

A massive search, rescue, and relief operation was launched immediately after the scale of the disaster became apparent. The district administration, led by Keyi Panyor Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta, directed senior police and circle officers to coordinate on-site emergency efforts.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed directly to the impacted colony, while teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been placed on high alert and mobilized to assist. Every available administrative vehicle and reserve resource within the Yazali jurisdiction has been pressed into service, alongside local ex-servicemen who have volunteered to aid in the rescue measures.

In response to the hydro-disaster, NEEPCO authorities moved swiftly to temporarily shut down power generation at the powerhouse. To stabilize the structural integrity of the facility and manage water levels, engineers have commenced a controlled, gradual release of water from the Ranganadi dam.

Beyond the immediate residential quarters, the relentless heavy rainfall has severely compromised regional transportation. Landslides have caused major road blockages at three critical locations along the highway network, completely washing away a key bridge and leaving dozens of commuters stranded near Potin and Hoj.

Heavy machinery and restoration crews have been positioned along the affected stretches. The district administration has issued a strict advisory to travelers, urging commuters to entirely avoid the route leading to Ziro in the Lower Subansiri district until the highway contractor clears the debris and the roads are officially declared safe for transit.
