Flames Trapped Guests: Horror Hotel Fire in India Claims 9 Lives, Including Toddler

KOLKATA, India — A devastating late-night inferno swept through a budget tourist hotel in central Kolkata, leaving at least nine people dead—including a young child—and six others injured as toxic smoke filled narrow corridors, trapping guests inside.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, August 18, 2026 at the five-storey Shikha Inn Hotel located on Mirza Ghalib Street, a bustling hub near New Market popular with visiting tourists and medical travelers.

According to local emergency services, the blaze ignited at approximately 2:00 a.m. on the second floor. Within minutes, thick, suffocating smoke poured through the stairwells, cutting off the main exit route for families sleeping inside.

Desperate calls for help echoed through the street as trapped occupants tried to navigate pitch-black hallways filled with toxic fumes.

"It was a very dangerous situation. I really don't know how we escaped," said Amirul Hossain, a guest who managed to flee the building. "There was no fire alarm or firefighting system sounding."

Multiple fire tenders, emergency response teams, and police rushed to the scene. Firefighters spent nearly two hours battling the flames and navigating dense smoke before bringing the fire under control.

Rescuers pulled over 60 guests to safety, but nine individuals—six men, two women, and a child—were found unconscious inside the upper floors. They were rushed to nearby medical facilities, where doctors pronounced them dead. Reports indicate that all nine victims were Bangladeshi nationals who had traveled to the city for medical care.

Investigators suspect an electrical short circuit or an air conditioner explosion triggered the blaze, though official forensics are still analyzing the scene.

The disaster has reignited intense scrutiny surrounding fire safety enforcement in the heavily congested hotel district. Preliminary reports indicate that the structure lacked functioning fire detection equipment and relied on a single entry and exit point, severely hampering evacuation efforts.

Local representatives have called for an immediate audit of commercial establishments in the area to address illegal structural alterations and a lack of safety compliance. Authorities confirmed that a formal investigation is underway to establish responsibility for the tragic loss of life.
