Fatal Strike: Five Dead After Russian Cruise Missiles Blast Civilian Vessel in Black Sea

ODESA, Ukraine — In a major escalation of hostilities in the Black Sea, Russian occupying forces launched three cruise missiles at an international civilian cargo ship on Sunday afternoon, July 19, 2026. The attack killed at least five crew members and sparked a massive fire on board, drawing sharp international condemnation from Ukrainian officials who have labeled it a deliberate act of terror against peaceful shipping.

The strike underscores a widening campaign by Moscow targeting global food supply routes and maritime infrastructure.

The targeted vessel, the bulk carrier Golden Leo, is a Turkish-owned ship flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau. According to the Ukrainian Navy, the ship was loaded with grain and was actively leaving the maritime corridor when it was targeted by three Russian Kh-59/Kh-69 cruise missiles.

The missiles directly struck the starboard side of the ship's superstructure, instantly triggering a severe blaze that quickly engulfed parts of the vessel. A Reuters witness stationed in the port city of Odesa reported seeing heavy smoke billowing from the large ship on the horizon.

The ship was carrying an international crew, primarily consisting of sailors from India and Syria, alongside a Ukrainian maritime pilot.

Following the initial impact and subsequent fire, five individuals—including the Ukrainian pilot and four crew members—were confirmed dead. Emergency response units from the Ukrainian Navy and the Maritime Search and Rescue Service swiftly deployed to the scene, successfully evacuating eight sailors and transferring them to a hospital in Odesa.

Meanwhile, as of Monday, the fate of five other crew members remains entirely unknown as search-and-rescue operations continue amid challenging conditions.

The technical condition of the heavily charred bulk carrier is currently being evaluated by maritime experts.

The targeted attack on a foreign-flagged merchant ship has sparked outrage in Kyiv. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry stated that they have begun formally notifying the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the respective governments of the foreign nationals affected.

"This is yet another deliberate Russian attack on an unarmed civilian vessel under a foreign flag that posed no military threat," the Ukrainian Navy said in an official statement. "The strike is an act of terror against peaceful shipping and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law."

Acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strike on X, emphasizing that the Golden Leo was executing a route serving global food security. "This attack leaves no room for illusions," Sybiha wrote. "Putin's Russia does not care whom it kills."

This fatal strike is part of an escalating pattern of Russian aggression against deepwater ports in southern Ukraine. Just days prior, separate Russian attacks in the Odesa region damaged two other commercial bulk carriers—the Venturo and a vessel flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda—resulting in additional civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.

Moscow has not publicly issued a statement regarding Sunday's missile strike.
