Fatal Rollover Crash Shuts Down Highway 128 Near Lake Berryessa; Driver Killed

NAPA COUNTY, CA — A violent single-vehicle rollover crash on state Highway 128 left one person dead and forced an extended closure of the roadway east of the Berryessa-Knoxville Road junction on Thursday evening, June 11, 2026.

Emergency crews and law enforcement personnel rushed to the scene following reports of a severe vehicle accident along the winding stretch of highway, which serves as a major transit artery near the south-eastern shores of Lake Berryessa.

According to initial dispatch logs from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident occurred when the driver of an unidentified passenger vehicle was traveling eastbound on Highway 128. For reasons still under investigation by traffic authorities, the driver lost control while navigating a sharp, descending curve in the roadway.

The vehicle veered off the asphalt, struck the adjacent embankment, and overturned completely. The momentum of the crash caused the vehicle to roll over multiple times before coming to a rest upside down, trapping the driver inside the crushed wreckage.

First responders, including Napa County sheriff's deputies and paramedics, arrived shortly after the collision. Despite immediate extrication efforts and the administration of emergency life-saving measures, the driver had sustained catastrophic injuries from the rollover and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Due to the severity of the wreckage and the debris scattered across both lanes, the CHP issued an emergency traffic alert, shutting down Highway 128 in both directions east of Berryessa-Knoxville Road.

Commuters and recreational travelers heading toward Yolo and Solano counties were instructed to avoid the corridor entirely, turning around at the roadblock as specialized units processed the crash site. The closure remained in effect for several hours while investigators mapped out tire tracks and cleared the mangled vehicle from the right-of-way.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office has withheld the identity of the deceased driver pending formal identification and the notification of next of kin.

While a definitive cause for the crash has not yet been determined, CHP investigators are examining whether excessive speed, distracted driving, or a sudden mechanical failure contributed to the driver losing traction on the notoriously unforgiving mountain pass. Officials confirmed that a routine toxicology report will be performed by the county coroner, though alcohol or drugs are not immediately suspected to be a primary factor.

The fatal incident adds to a growing history of serious accidents along Highway 128. Local transport advocates have frequently cited the route's blind corners, lack of wide shoulders, and shifting elevation profiles as significant hazards for drivers unfamiliar with the rural terrain surrounding the Lake Berryessa recreation zones.
