Fatal Landslide in Kalikot: Two Men Killed While Operating Traditional Water Mill In Nepal

Kalikot, Nepal—A landslide killed two men at a traditional water mill in Sanni Triveni Rural Municipality on Monday afternoon. Local authorities confirmed the recovery of the bodies late in the day after a massive debris flow descended from the hillside. The victims were identified as Mandir Saud and Lal Bahadur Saud.

The two men had been working at the Kaprikhola mill to grind grain when the ground gave way. Witnesses reported the slide struck the structure at roughly 1:30 PM following days of consistent rain. The force of the earth buried nearly half of the mill instantly.

A local police team from the Mehalmudi post led the initial response. They traveled ten kilometers to reach the site through difficult, mud-slicked terrain. The recovery operation concluded after several hours of manual clearing of the wreckage.

District Police Chief Him Bahadur Khatri deployed a specialized investigation unit to the area shortly after the bodies were found. Officials are currently assessing the structural stability of surrounding hillsides. Residents have been warned that saturated soil remains a significant threat throughout the region.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology issued alerts for flash floods across multiple provinces due to continued weather patterns. Hilly areas in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki are seeing similar spikes in seismic risk. Small river basins are being monitored for sudden water level surges.

This incident follows a separate fatal event in Jajarkot where another woman perished in her shelter. Relief operations are struggling to reach remote sites as roads become blocked by minor slides. Security agencies including the Nepal Army remain on standby for emergency response.

The lack of permanent infrastructure for survivors of previous disasters has exacerbated the local vulnerability. Many families still rely on temporary housing that offers little protection against geological instability. Official reports indicate that 73 separate natural disaster incidents occurred across Nepal in the last 24 hours alone.

Local governance officials are urging villagers to abandon precarious water mills and structures located near steep banks. The weather forecast provides little relief with moderate to heavy rainfall expected through the end of the week. Emergency teams remain focused on monitoring river levels.
