MUSCATINE, Iowa — A quiet community is in mourning after a devastating series of shootings on Monday, June 1, 2026, left seven people dead, including the suspected gunman.
The Muscatine Police Department received a report of gunfire at a residence on Park Avenue at approximately 12:12 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, officers discovered four victims inside the home who had been fatally shot.
The suspect, identified by police as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine, had fled the scene before authorities arrived. A search was immediately launched, and officers eventually located McFarland on a riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge. According to Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies, the suspect took his own life while officers were attempting to speak with him.
As the investigation progressed, detectives uncovered evidence pointing to further victims. Police subsequently discovered the bodies of two more men—one in a nearby residence and another inside a local business—who had also died from apparent gunshot wounds.
Authorities have stated that the violence appears to have stemmed from a "domestic-related dispute," and all six victims are believed to be family members of McFarland. While Chief Kies confirmed that the suspect had a prior criminal record, he declined to provide further details regarding the history or the specific motives behind the shootings.
As of Tuesday morning, the victims have not been publicly identified, though local media reports indicate that at least two of those killed were children.
"Today I simply do not have the words," Chief Kies said during a news conference. "This act of evil and what it has done to our community". The Muscatine Police Department’s major crimes unit is currently processing the multiple crime scenes and conducting interviews as the investigation remains active.
