Estonia has received its first IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense missile system, according to the Estonian Defense Forces.
The system arrived at Ämari Air Base on June 22. Once operational, it will extend Estonia’s air-defense coverage, enabling engagement of aircraft and other airborne threats at higher altitudes and longer ranges than the short-range systems Estonia already has.
The IRIS-T SLM is procured through the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments from German defense manufacturer Diehl Defence. Officials said the upgrade is a major step in strengthening Estonia’s air-defense capabilities in light of the lessons of the war in Ukraine.
The IRIS-T SLM is designed to intercept targets including aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles, with capabilities described in reporting as up to roughly 40 km in range and up to about 20 km in altitude. The system is mobile, allowing it to be redeployed as needed, and Estonia expects that bringing it fully into service will require training and field integration ahead of sustained operational use.
Estonian officials framed the delivery as an important milestone in building a broader air-defense network as NATO’s eastern flank continues to expand defenses.
