BAGHDAD, IRAQ — A series of joint, high-precision military strikes conducted by the United States and Saudi Arabia overnight has left at least 20 paramilitary fighters dead and another 32 wounded, according to a preliminary casualty toll released early Wednesday morning. The heavy aerial bombardment targeted multiple command facilities and military positions across seven different provinces in Iraq.

The targeted umbrella group, Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF)—a state-integrated alliance encompassing several Iran-backed factions—confirmed the losses in an official statement. According to the PMF, the overnight operations struck its headquarters and logistical bases in the provinces of Baghdad, Wasit, Nineveh, Basra, Kirkuk, Karbala, and Diyala. The group stated that the "joint US-Saudi aggression" resulted in extensive material damage, destroying military equipment, transport vehicles, and localized command installations alongside the heavy human toll.

According to a statement released by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the joint air campaign was launched in direct retaliation for a surge in hostile actions over the preceding three days, which included more than 30 attempted drone attacks directed at U.S. military assets and critical Saudi Arabian energy facilities. Saudi authorities confirmed they had recently intercepted several weaponized drones originating from Iraqi territory that targeted petroleum infrastructure in Riyadh and the country’s eastern oil fields. CENTCOM attributed the planning and execution of these drone incursions directly to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), warning that further military responses would follow if the proxy actions did not cease immediately.

The sudden involvement of Saudi Arabia alongside the U.S. marks a significant escalation in regional dynamics, representing the first highly publicized joint combat mission between the two nations inside Iraq targeting these specific factions. Historically, the PMF has faced recurring accusations from international observers of acting outside the direct command of the central government in Baghdad to advance regional strategic objectives.

In response to the severe breaches of national airspace, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has called an emergency session of the parliamentary National Security Council to deliberate on the geopolitical fallout and address the infringement on Iraqi sovereignty. Meanwhile, local emergency services and PMF medical units remain on high alert as they continue search-and-recovery operations in the rubble of the flattened facilities, warning that the final death toll may rise as more critically injured personnel are treated at regional trauma centers.
