Double Disaster in Taguig: Fallen Post and Tree Crush Vehicles on South Daang Hari

TAGUIG CITY, Philippines — What began as a standard Monday morning commute descended into traffic gridlock and near-tragedy along South Daang Hari when a double hazard struck passing motorists within moments of each other.

At approximately 8:30 AM on Monday, August 10, 2026 an electric utility post suddenly collapsed directly onto a private sedan traveling along the busy thoroughfare. Almost simultaneously, further down the same stretch, an uprooted roadside tree came crashing down, crushing the roof of a commercial passenger van.

Commuters and nearby residents reported hearing a sharp, metallic snap, followed closely by the thunderous crash of the falling tree.

"The post came down right onto the hood and windshield of the car," said an eyewitness who was waiting for transport nearby. "Seconds later, people started shouting because a huge tree branch gave way further down the road, landing right on top of the van."

Emergency response teams—including the Taguig City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), local police, and paramedics—rushed to the scene to secure the area and provide assistance. Utility workers from the local power distributor were immediately dispatched to shut off electricity in the overhead lines to prevent electrocution risks for trapped passengers and first responders.

While paramedics evaluated drivers and passengers at the site, clearing crews equipped with chainsaws began cutting away the fallen tree branches, while heavy equipment was deployed to hoist the utility post off the damaged sedan.

The dual obstruction forced traffic enforcement personnel to temporarily close off portions of South Daang Hari, redirecting motorists toward alternate routes through C-5 Extension and Alabang–Zapote Road, causing heavy tailbacks during peak morning hours.

Local authorities are currently investigating the cause of both structural failures. Preliminary reports suggest that recent saturated soil from rain, paired with aging infrastructure or untrimmed branches, may have contributed to the simultaneous accidents.

City officials issued a public reminder for motorists to exercise heightened caution around roadside trees and overhead wiring, especially during inclement weather or periods of high wind.

The affected stretch of South Daang Hari is expected to reopen fully once the vehicles are towed and clearing operations conclude.
