Denmark: Trial for Quran burning kicks off in Bornholm

This Friday, a historic trial begins in Bornholm, Denmark’s Baltic Sea island. Prosecutors say two men are accused of “improper treatment of a religious scripture,” after they allegedly burned a copy of the Quran—Islam’s central religious text—in front of an audience at a folk festival in June 2024. They are further accused of livestreaming the act on Facebook.

Danish public prosecutors have not yet disclosed the defendants’ identities or the full details of what happened. They did say a verdict is expected on the same day as the trial. The proceedings will take place in Ronne, Bornholm’s largest town.

The case is the first of its kind under a new Danish law that criminalizes inappropriate treatment of religious scripture, including the Quran, Bible, and Torah. The law entered into force on December 7, 2023. Prosecutors’ interpretation of “inappropriate treatment” covers acts such as defiling, tearing, trampling, and burning religious texts.

Under the law, penalties can range from fines up to two years in prison depending on the severity of the charges.

The law was introduced after a wave of Quran burnings in Denmark in 2023, which triggered strong reactions abroad and heightened international tensions.
