Deadly Afghan Flash Floods: Five Lives Lost As Severe Weather Ravages Multiple Northern Provinces

Kabul, Afghanistan—Flash floods and severe storms claimed five lives across eight provinces over the last two days. The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority confirmed the deaths on Saturday, noting that heavy rainfall has triggered landslides and property damage nationwide. Thousands of acres of farmland have been submerged in the latest wave of environmental instability.

The casualties were reported in Kabul, Zabul, Kandahar, Samangan, Takhar, Nangarhar, Laghman, and Kunar. Beyond the loss of life, the storms destroyed or partially damaged thirty residential homes. Rural infrastructure also suffered, with over sixty kilometers of roads washed away by rising waters.

Spokesperson Hafiz Mohammad Yusuf Hamad stated that the flooding has paralyzed irrigation networks in affected rural districts. The disaster has devastated the local agricultural output, hitting farmers who rely on seasonal crops for their annual livelihood. Many families remain displaced as their homes have been rendered uninhabitable.

Residents in Kunar described the speed of the rising waters as catastrophic. The torrents leveled boundary walls and inundated storehouses, destroying winter food stocks and household equipment. Aid groups are currently struggling to reach remote areas where mountain roads have been blocked by mudslides.

This event adds to an already lethal season for the country. Since late March, authorities report that similar weather patterns have killed over 314 people and injured hundreds more. The cumulative impact of these disasters has left thousands in need of emergency shelter and medical supplies.

Local government officials are attempting to coordinate relief efforts, but resources are limited. The destruction of livestock and solar panel arrays, which provide essential energy to remote villages, has further hampered the recovery process. Communities are now appealing for international assistance to clear the debris and restore basic connectivity.

Meteorological warnings suggest that more rain is likely in the coming week. The ground remains saturated, increasing the risk of secondary landslides in the eastern provinces. Disaster response teams are prioritizing the clearance of primary supply routes to allow food convoys to move forward.

The authorities have urged residents in high-risk zones to move to higher ground immediately. Despite these warnings, many families remain in vulnerable homes, unwilling to abandon their land and remaining property. The situation remains fluid as assessments continue across the affected regions.
