Colombia Rocked by 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake—Its Largest in the Past Decade

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, killing at least 73 people, with many others injured and residents trapped under debris in multiple cities. The epicenter was near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region, about 250 miles west of Bogotá, and the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of about 66 miles. Colombia’s geological service said it was the highest magnitude earthquake recorded there in the past decade, followed by multiple aftershocks.
