China has test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean in a rare public launch, the first of its kind reported in international waters for decades, prompting concern among regional countries.

China’s defense ministry said the test was a routine part of annual military training, conducted in line with international law and “not directed against any country or target.” Officials said relevant countries were notified in advance, and the missile was launched from Hainan and landed in a predetermined area of high seas. The exact impact location was not clearly confirmed publicly.

The launch drew criticism from countries in the Pacific region. Australia said the test was destabilising and urged China to provide transparency and reassurance. New Zealand and other Pacific leaders also expressed concern and called for restraint, arguing that such long-range tests undermine regional stability.

Analysts said the test may have been intended to signal China’s nuclear and missile capabilities to the United States and its allies, particularly amid ongoing tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
