Chaos on I-75: Fireworks Trailer Sparks Massive Explosions in Hamilton County

OOLTEWAH, Tennessee — Motorists traveling through Hamilton County experienced a chaotic and unexpectedly hazardous scene on Saturday evening, June 6, 2026, when a trailer packed with fireworks caught fire, triggering a series of dramatic explosions directly on Interstate 75.

The incident forced emergency officials to completely shut down both directions of the heavily traveled highway just outside of Chattanooga as explosive shells shot into the night sky and across active lanes.

According to the Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD), the vehicle fire broke out on the northbound side of I-75, just past the Ooltewah exit. What began as a standard vehicle fire quickly escalated when the intense heat penetrated the trailer's cargo area, igniting the massive supply of commercial or consumer fireworks inside.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of sudden panic as colorful bursts, loud detonations, and erratic sparks began launching unpredictably in multiple directions from the burning wreckage. Drivers were forced to halt on the highway to avoid the flying ordnance, creating a massive gridlock as smoke blanketed the roadway.

Local law enforcement and Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department crews rushed to the scene alongside Chattanooga firefighters. Because fireworks were actively detonating across the pavement, arriving emergency personnel had to establish a wide safety perimeter, completely freezing traffic in both the northbound and southbound lanes to protect drivers.

First responders worked deliberately to contain the blaze while keeping a safe distance from the ongoing explosions. Once the bulk of the fireworks had spent themselves, firefighting crews were able to move in with hoses to douse the remaining structural fire and cool the charred carcass of the trailer.

Despite the high-velocity hazards and the potential for multi-vehicle collisions on the busy interstate, authorities confirmed a remarkably fortunate outcome: no injuries were reported. The driver of the transport vehicle was able to safely pull over and exit the vehicle before the cargo fully ignited.

The Chattanooga Fire Department noted that while the southbound lanes were eventually cleared for travel, the northbound lanes remained shuttered for an extended period into the night. Heavy wreckers and cleanup crews had to carefully sweep the highway to remove remnants of the burned trailer, unexploded ordnance, and scattered debris before reopening the route to standard traffic.

The exact mechanical or electrical fault that initiated the trailer fire remains under active investigation by state and local transit authorities.
