PIKESVILLE, MD: A mass casualty incident transformed a busy Maryland roadway into what emergency officials described as a "war scene" late Wednesday afternoon, after a public transit bus collided with multiple vehicles before slamming directly into a building. The violent multi-vehicle crash left 33 people injured, with at least one person fighting for their life in critical condition.
The collision occurred just before 6:00 PM on July 8, 2026, along the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road, spanning several blocks between Old Court Road and McHenry Avenue.
According to the Baltimore County Fire Department, a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus was traveling through the area when it collided with a dozen other civilian vehicles. The force of the successive impacts caused severe damage along the corridor, leaving car parts, bricks, and debris strewn across the asphalt.
Witnesses described a terrifying chain reaction. "The bus took out one to seven cars, took out the telephone pole, then took out the business where it sits," recalled one nearby worker.
The wreckage left several vehicles completely mangled, including one car that flipped entirely onto its roof. First responders arriving at the scene had to execute complex extractions to rescue two individuals who were trapped inside the crushed vehicles—one within the bus itself and another pinned inside an overturned car.
The sheer scale of the disaster prompted authorities to declare a second-alarm mass casualty incident, drawing over 100 first responders from across Baltimore, Anne Arundel, and Howard counties.
A fleet of 15 ambulances rushed to the area to treat and transport victims, including the bus driver. Due to the severity of the injuries, a shock trauma team and a Maryland State Police medevac helicopter were deployed to the scene. The sole patient listed in critical condition was airlifted directly to a regional trauma center.
"The span of this being from Old Court all the way down, you can see the vehicles in the roadway," Baltimore County Fire Chief Joseph Dixon stated during a press conference. "It's more like a war scene."
The crash caused significant infrastructure disruptions beyond the structural damage to the commercial building, which appeared to be a FedEx location. Multiple utility poles were snapped, sending live power lines draping across the roadway and triggering localized blackouts. Representatives from Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) and a building engineer were dispatched to secure the grid and evaluate the structural integrity of the impacted property.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed his gratitude to the emergency crews on social media, stating, "We are deeply grateful for our first responders who acted with speed and skill to ensure the safety of our neighbors. We've been in close coordination with local officials to provide any support needed on the ground."
The Baltimore County Police Department has closed Reisterstown Road in both directions for an extended period to conduct a thorough accident reconstruction. The precise cause of the crash remains under active investigation, and officials have not yet commented on whether speed or a mechanical failure played a role.
